Foster (2010) won the Davy Byrnes short-story award, and Small Things Like These (2021) won the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction and the Irish Novel of the Year Award. Her second, Walk the Blue Fields (2007), won the Edge Hill short-story prize. Her debut collection, Antarctica (1999), won the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Keegan is one of those equally rare authors whose every work has won a major prize. Today, as her newest story, So Late in the Day, is awarded the rare accolade of being published as a standalone hardback, she no longer has to bother. Jones and Minnelli are at their best.When Claire Keegan began writing short stories, in the 1990s, watching the word count was an important part of the process as she entered and won competitions to build her reputation. This is a very good film for a tearjerker. Miklos Rozsa contributed a fine score, with especially notable music for the ball scene. Louis Jourdan is just about perfect as Emma's seducer who literally sweeps her off her feet. Van Heflin is good if overemphatic and too American as Emma's husband. She at least deserved a Best Actress nomination from the Academy. She is marvelously subtle as a woman who switches from role to role in her fantasy life, and doesn't let reality intrude until it's too late. She hits all the right notes as a girl who can't/doesn't separate fantasy from reality. After the two marry, they go to the village in Normandy where Charles lives. Bovary (Heflin) comes to treat her fathers' broken leg, she sees him as her Prince Charming and falls in love with him. She grows up believing and fantasizing about love and romance, and that they happen in real life as in fiction.
She grows up on an isolated farm, and is further isolated by her convent education.
After the prosecution finishes its' case, Flaubert answers his answer frames a flashback to Emma Bovary's (Jones) story.
Film opens at Flaubert's (Mason) 1857 trial for obscenity in France.
